GUEST POST BY KIRSTY WIRTH OF KULTURED WELLNESS.
Did you know you have the power to change the course of your life, and your family’s lives, with how you nourish your body?
I believe you can heal your families gut in a holistic way. I want to share with you that adding delicious and nutritious fermented foods to your diet doesn’t have to be hard.
I’ve always had health problems – weight issues, fatigue, and constant muscle and back pain. As I got older, this spiralled into difficulty sleeping, acne, mental health issues and other insecurities. I felt out of control and powerless about my health and how I felt day to day.
When I became a mum, I realised that something much more serious was going on. Me feeling ‘not quite right’ all my life had bigger consequences than I had ever thought possible. When my young children became very ill I was determined to do anything I could to change the course of their lives.
Through years of research, I’ve gained a deep understanding of the role of our gut in being able to experience true wellness. I’ve learnt firsthand what we’ve always known – that all disease begins in the gut.
For me and many others, chronic health problems are inherited and then passed down to our children. But the good news is, that whilst our genes are responsible for who we are, we now know that we have the power to switch them on and off.
At present, there is an epidemic of behavioural problems and learning challenges in our youth, how long is it going to take before we make the connection between what we eat and how the body responds?
Nourish your gut; allow its microbiome to flourish, and heal.
The problem is that our guts are often so damaged by things such as medications, antibiotics, preservatives, painkillers and stress, that it is often not as simple as popping a probiotic pill or drinking a green smoothie and thinking you’ll be OK.
My philosophy is simple: we need to accept the cards we have been dealt and then take responsibility for our own health and that of the next generation. It’s about making sure that we don’t continue to hand down these health issues that could be stopped now.
Kultured Wellness Yoghurt & Kefir starter culture
My yoghurt and kefir starters were developed out of pure necessity and desperation, as I sought to provide my children with the high-dose probiotic nourishment that they needed to heal in a way that we could afford, and that our family could tolerate.
At the end of the day, I’m just like you – a parent who wants the best for those around me and to be able to share what I’ve learnt.
From my research and experience, I don’t believe that traditional fermented food has the power that we need to restore the robust gut microbiome of our ancestors. We now spend less time in nature and have very little exposure to dirt, which is where we acquire a lot of our beneficial and diverse bacteria.
Traditional wild ferments, teeming with lactobacilli, were once enough to supplement and support a healthy inner ecosystem. However, for many people today who begin with a lack of diversity in their gut, these foods alone will not cause a major shift in the health of the gut microbiome. This is where specially cultured foods can help ensure that you are getting a wide variety of beneficial bacteria to support your gut diversity.
My research into fermenting eventually led me to develop my own culture starters, which contain a wide variety of specially selected bacteria strains that are key to healing and building a damaged gut microbiome. Where the origin and potency of many starter cultures is unknown, the cultures that I have developed are pure and of a therapeutic potency, which was necessary for my family’s gut healing journey.
Healing your families gut
The use of cultures and fermentation in the everyday diet of my family has changed our lives. I’m passionate about helping more people and families in our community and spreading the word about how fermenting can be an easy and powerful way to nourish the gut microbiome for good health. This is not a fad diet or a quick fix, it’s a commitment to the adventure of healing, and a true desire for a better life.
The path to good health is not always easy, but you can come out the other side. Feeling well. And when we feel well, the benefits and opportunities are limitless.
