24 hour yoghurt, otherwise know as ‘Specific Carbohydrate Diet’ Yoghurt is a cornerstone for many people on SCD and GAPS diets. Yoghurt is a living food, full of active, beneficial bacteria that have a vital job to do. If you’re interested in healing your gut, it’s important you read this post. SCD 24 Hour yoghurt may be just what your body needs!
I’ve spent countless hours reading about nutrition and how food can heal the body. I’ve dug deep in an effort to unearth ways to reduce inflammation and help heal my gut woes.
I stopped eating grains 2 years ago. I’ve taken out, replaced and substituted. I’ve altered my habits to give my body the best chance possible to heal. I have a ‘listen to my body’ policy that works for me.
But as a mother, as a provider, I have a grain quandary? I’m the food gatherer and cook in my house. I design the menu. My family comes for the ride. I’m strict with my health pursuit but I watch my husband and children go for grains when the meals are not home cooked and I completely get it.
The grain debate is a minefield for me. The health implications for me breaking from my regime can be dire. At times, I can be adamantly opposed to having a single spec of grain in the house! Other times, I appreciate how much easier my life would be if I weren’t quite so rigid.…
Culturing gain is what our ancestors did. There wasn’t a single tradition or tribe that regularly ate unfermented, unprepared grains.
As long as people have been relying on grains, (‘grain’ in this post includes nuts, seeds and legumes) for food, they’ve been soaking them. It’s really not a new fad. In fact it’s an ages old wisdom.
In the past 50 years all sorts of quick fix, short cut, food solutions have been substituted to make our lives seemingly easier. Soaking grains or, more specifically, culturing them is a tradition that has been sidelined in our time poor lives. Today, people don’t even understand why it was ever done in the first place?…
24 hour Yoghurt vs a Probiotic – Here’s why you need to make this!
Fermented food has been a mainstay of the human diet for tens of thousands of years. These days fermenting is not so common – to the detriment of our health. If you’re on the gut health path, you are probably keen to learn how to get more fermented food into your diet. Getting a dose of probiotics from homemade, naturally fermented yoghurt is a great place to start. But, it can’t be any old yoghurt – it has to be homemade 24-hour yoghurt if you want to get your fill.
Should you allow your family to have Mexican tonight?
Last week I made Tacos. Well, Faux Tacos actually. There was no corn in sight. I made them from buckwheat. While preparing to post the recipe I thought I’d check out what was available in our supermarkets. What I discovered actually scared the pants off me. What they put into readymade Mexican is horrifying!
A number of companies have made it their mission to bring to our local supermarket a range of products that allow us to do an easy Mexican meal for all the family. It’s a lovely idea – and a popular one. They have really staked a claim; the Mexican section is larger than the Asian section in my local supermarket.
But what is commonly available in the guise of a ‘tortilla’ or ‘taco’ is delightfully simple poisonous Mexican concoction.
Your digestive system is home to an amazing ecosystem; a parallel world of micro-organisms known as your micro-biome or gut flora.
Before you were born your body was free from microbes but at the moment of birth, a massive invasion of bacteria entered your gastrointestinal tract, populating your body with various types of microbes. Now you have possibly thousands of micro species living in your gut. It’s a microbial-world that has a vital role. Without them, you would struggle to survive….
Hi, it’s me. Your digestive system. Call me DS for short.
That’s my nickname here on A Gut Feeling. Finally, you’ve noticed me. While I’ve got your ear, I want to set a few things straight and tell you what I’m really up to here in your body. For, before it’s too late, I don’t want to be known as a leaky gut.
You don’t have a tummy ache? You don’t have digestive issues? Don’t think I’m not talking to you still. I’m talking to everyone, stomach problems or not. That’s where people misunderstand me. My work involves more than your stomach. Mess with me and I can mess with your entire body.
You see, I’m friends with many other organs. I’m especially good friends with your brain. We talk a lot. I’m also fond of your skin and your bones too. In fact, I’m closely connected to every aspect of your body’s functioning. We are designed to work together….
Why SCD Yoghurt (Specific Carbohydrate Diet 24 hour yoghurt) is so important.
Without any doubt home-made 24 hour SCD yoghurt must be my debut recipe post on A Gut Feeling! It’s the stand out, make a difference, too good to be missed, jam packed with goodness, white, wobbly stuff that is a must for everyone’s gut!
Now we all know that yoghurt is meant to be good for us. Right? Yes, all the ads tell us so. There’s a huge market out there. That’s why people eat it for breakfast, that’s why we put it in smoothies and it’s marketed to children. Ahhh but Stop!!! Most of it is rubbish! Most supermarket yoghurt is not healthy! If you’re going to eat yoghurt, why not have the real thing? Why not have the bee’s knees of yoghurt?
Did you know that not even the most expensive, organic, biodynamic, whole milk, natural tub set, blah, blah, etc etc. yoghurt can ever be as good as the white wobbly stuff you could easily make at home? It’s true.
But before you run off and make any old batch, hear me out. It must be 24 hour yoghurt, AKA ‘SCD’ yoghurt. SCD yoghurt is the holy grail of beneficial foods. It’s not just food, it’s medicine.
It’s completely reasonable to have a sticker requesting ‘No Junk Mail’ on your letter box these days. I am one of those, yet on a windy day supermarket catalogues are like tumbleweed and end up littering our street.
As I dutifully picked up pages from my front garden recently I couldn’t help but be appalled by the selection of non-food commanding my attention! I hadn’t made the correlation between junk mail and junk food before. They sound the same, hey? I wonder what came first? Junk mail or junk food? Maybe there is a chicken joke in there? They are a perfect union. The supermarkets must get the message out; it’s a desperate price war. Who can sell the most sugar and processed food for the best price? Wow, Fantastic! I’d better get to the shops.
Actually I did go to the shops, I drove to each nearby supermarket and surreptitiously filled my pink “green-bag” with as many catalogues as I could. There was something in these for me….
I couldn’t continue to accept that a stomach ache every day was normal. I had a gut feeling my body was telling me something more about the food I ate.
In 2011 I joined a 200 strong secret society of concerned parents to hear Sue Dengate of ‘The Food Intolerance network’. It’s funny, I went to it with my children in mind. Little did I know how it would influence my life! Sue’s slideshow sermon on food intolerances opened my eyes to the detrimental effects of many ingredients in our everyday food. It could have been death by Powerpoint, but instead it was it was the beginning of the end of how I previously related to food. What died that night was my culinary complacency.
Immediately afterwards I waged a war in my own pantry. Armed with information about a range of preservatives and the many duplicitous aliases they assumed, I started flushing the enemy out. I interrogated the ingredient panels on every foodstuff. Within a week I had either binned or given away most of my pantry.
